The Purge Election Year

Parody only works at full commitment. A campaign ad that winks at you is a sketch; one that is cast, shot, cut and graded exactly like the thing it is imitating is a joke the viewer gets to make for themselves. This was built to the second standard.

Shot like the real thing, on purpose

The visual grammar of a campaign spot is narrow and everybody already knows it: a person outside their own front door, a slow push in, midday light softened just enough to flatter, and a montage of a country that never quite exists. Reproducing that faithfully is most of the work. The moment the craft drops, it stops reading as parody and starts reading as a cheap advertisement.

The joke is in the premise, never in the camera

Every line on screen is one a real campaign could have run — have your voice heard, show your support, do not let your freedoms be taken away. Nothing is exaggerated and nothing is nudged. The picture plays it straight and the premise underneath does all of the work, which is the only version of this that survives a second viewing.

Ordinary faces have to carry it

Nobody in a spot like this can be seen performing. A woman on the sidewalk between errands, an older man in a booth halfway through lunch — cast and shot so the only strange thing in the frame is what they are saying. Put a knowing look on either of them and the whole thing collapses into a sketch.

This one moves — the full reel returns with the site’s media phase. What you see above is its poster frame.
