Welcome to Mazda CX-50

Three environments in one cut is a continuity problem before it is a camera problem. Whether mountain road, city and trail would hold as a single piece was decided at the scout, not rescued in the edit.

Commercial production for the CX-50 launch: location scout, crew, principal photography and grade. Three environments, one continuous piece.

Continuity is decided at the scout

Locations that will be cut together have to be chosen against each other, not one at a time. Sun direction, road surface, horizon height and the hour each place is usable are all fixed at the scout, and everything the edit can do about them afterwards is a compromise.

Three environments, one grade

Mountain, city and trail do not share a color temperature or a contrast range, and a spot that cuts between them will show every seam. Matching them is a grade built for the sequence rather than three looks reconciled afterwards.

One scope, from scout to grade

Split across vendors, every stage below hands off to the next with something lost in the handover — usually the reason a choice was made, and always an afternoon spent re-explaining it to whoever came next. Run as one scope, the person who picked the location is the person who has to make it cut, and nobody on the client side is standing in the middle relaying it.
